The rain was misting over the city of
San Francisco that morning. Summer had
finally gone and the fall had arrived.
Derek was reflecting on the events of the past few days and, as he read and
re-read his journal entries, he considered that it had gone quite well .. all
things weighed and measured. Derek knew
that Haystone had shaken Andrew and he might need more than a little time to
fully understand and cope with that reaction.
He might never return to this house.
Therefore, Derek was surprised to hear
a soft, deprecating cough from the doorway and he glanced round, his eyes
quizzical. Andrew stood there, carrying
a silver tray.
“I’ve brought your coffee, Dr Rayne.”
Derek nodded to indicate he should
come in. Andrew did so in silence and
placed the tray on the small desk, then turned to leave. Derek, in turn, cleared his throat and the
butler halted but did not look round.
“Welcome back,” Derek smiled.
He saw Andrew’s shoulders relax
slightly.
“Thank you, sir,” he murmured. “It’s good to be back.”
Still, Andrew didn’t move. Perhaps he sensed that Derek hadn’t finished
with him. That an explanation was
required from him.
“We’ll talk when you’re ready,” Derek
said softly. “Not before.”
Andrew swallowed and nodded
quickly. Then, head slightly lowered,
he walked out.
Still smiling gently, Derek returned
to watching the misty rain roll past his window. Everything would be all right.
Life was normal again.
